Private pilot ground school cost: what providers publish
Ground school is the study part of the cost of a private pilot certificate. These are the prices and terms each provider's own page states, read on October 4, 2026. They are not quotes, and the comparison articles that list them often disagree with the providers.
What this page does and does not cover
It covers online courses for the private pilot certificate and one test prep subscription, taken from the providers' own pages. It does not rank them, say which teaches best, or test any of them. Flight school rates are on the cost page.
What each provider's page says
| Course | Price | Access | FAA written test endorsement | Guarantee, as the page words it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gleim Online Ground School: Private Pilot | $159.95 | Access expires 12 months from the date of purchase | States it issues one | Says it guarantees you will pass your FAA knowledge test if taken within 30 days after graduation, and refunds the purchase price if you do not pass on the first attempt. |
| ASA (Aviation Supplies and Academics) Private Pilot Online Ground School | $179.95 | 24 months from course registration | States it issues one | Not stated on the page we read. |
| Gold Seal Online Ground School Gold Seal Private Pilot Ground School | $229 for the first year, then $60 a year | One year; additional annual enrollments are $60 | States it issues one | Says it reimburses the cost of the exam, up to $175, if you complete the program and do not pass the FAA knowledge test on the first try (taken within 7 days of the final exam), plus a 90 day full refund if you have not completed the course. |
| FlightInsight Private Pilot Ground School | $249 | Not stated on the page we read | Not stated on the page we read | Not stated on the page we read. |
| Pilot Institute Private Pilot Made Easy Online Ground School | $249, one time | Lifetime access, no recurring fees | States it issues one | Says it will send $175 and refund 100% of the course if you do not pass the FAA test on your first try, plus a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. |
| Sporty's Learn to Fly Course, Private Pilot Ground School | $299 | Free lifetime updates; the page does not state how long course access lasts | States it issues one | Says "We guarantee that you'll pass all three tests required to get your Private Pilot certificate (FAA knowledge test, checkride oral and checkride flight) or you're entitled to a full refund." |
| FLY8MA Private Pilot Ground School | $349 (the page shows $449 crossed out) | Lifetime access when bought as a single course | States it issues one | Says it gives a full refund if you complete the courses for a certificate and fail the written test or checkride. |
| King Schools Complete Private Pilot Course | $349 | Free lifetime course access and automatic updates, no subscriptions | Not stated on the page we read | Says "100% money-back guarantee". The conditions are not stated on the page we read. |
| Sporty's Deluxe Learn To Fly Course Kit | $499 | Same course as above; the page does not state how long access lasts | States it issues one | See the Learn to Fly Course; the kit page does not restate it. |
| King Schools Private Pilot Deluxe Kit | $599 (the page also shows $1,274 crossed out) | Free lifetime course access and automatic updates, no subscriptions | Not stated on the page we read | Says "100% money-back guarantee". The conditions are not stated on the page we read. |
| Aviation Test Prep Private Pilot written exam prep | $19.99 a month, $49.99 every 3 months, or $179.99 a year | Subscription; cancel any time; one subscription covers one exam at a time | Not stated on the page we read | Says it has a pass guarantee on the quarterly and annual plans. |
Full courses run $159.95 to $349 (median $249, 8 courses). Bundles add books, gear or extra courses. The test prep subscription is a question bank, not a course. "Not stated" means the page we read did not say; the provider may say it elsewhere.
Where the comparison articles disagree
7 of 12 prices in three comparison articles differ from the provider's own page. The articles carry different dates, and a gap may be a sale, an older price or a different package, but a reader comparing them would not know which number to trust.

A listed range that contains the provider's own price counts as a match. Articles may price a different package than the course we read. Each article's address is in its column heading.
Where they disagree on the endorsement
- King Schools: FLYING Magazine says the course includes an endorsement; the provider's own page does not mention one.
- Pilot Institute: Student Pilot Resource says the course does not include an FAA endorsement; the provider's own page says it does.
- King Schools: Student Pilot Resource says the course includes an endorsement; the provider's own page does not mention one.
Common questions
- How much does an online private pilot ground school cost?
- On the providers' own pages, the 8 full courses we read run from $159.95 to $349, with a median of $249. Access differs a lot: from 12 months to lifetime. Bundles with books or extra courses cost more, and a test prep subscription costs less per month but is not a course. Read October 4, 2026.
- Why do comparison articles list different prices for the same course?
- Of the 12 course prices listed in the 3 comparison articles we read, 7 differ from the provider's own page as we read it. Reasons we cannot see from outside include sales, older prices and different packages. Each article carries its own date, or none. Check the provider's page at the moment you buy.
- Does ground school include the endorsement to take the FAA written test?
- 6 of the 8 full courses say on their own pages that they issue an endorsement or sign-off (Gleim, ASA (Aviation Supplies and Academics), Gold Seal Online Ground School, Pilot Institute, Sporty's, FLY8MA). 2 do not state it on the page we read (FlightInsight, King Schools). One article says Pilot Institute does not include one, while Pilot Institute's page says it does. Ask the provider before you buy if you need it.
- What does the FAA written test itself cost?
- The ground school price is separate from the test. 5 of the flight schools we read name the FAA knowledge test at about $175 on their own pages (California Flight School, Illinois Aviation Academy, Roadrunner Flight School, SimpliFly, Tailwinds Academy). Two ground schools mention the same amount in their guarantees: Pilot Institute says it sends $175 on top of a refund if you fail on the first try, and Gold Seal says it reimburses the exam up to $175, each with its own conditions.
How to use this
- Ask the provider whether the course issues the endorsement you need to take the written test, and how long access lasts.
- Read the guarantee's conditions, not its headline. Time limits (for example testing within 7 or 30 days) and what is refunded vary.
- Check the price on the provider's own page on the day you buy. Several providers show a crossed-out price and none of the pages we read said when a sale ends.
- Your flight school may bundle or recommend a course. Ask what it costs through the school before you buy separately.
